Teaching art in my studio in DeiĆ”

I have always admired the artistic (as well as musical) talent of David Templeton, and over the years David has done a number of paintings for us which hang in our homes in England and in Deia. I myself have always loved art and when I was a boy enjoyed both drawing and painting but since then with education careers and family I have rarely picked up a pencil and never a brush. I am now 52 so in May I decided to ask David if he would give me a few lessons. I had no idea this was something he did. We had a great time, one I would truly recommend.

I had a few ideas of what I wanted to do, particularly I was keen to work in oil and as I am a big Rolling Stones fan I firstly wanted to do a picture of a grungy “Mick”, we began learning how to go about drawing facial characteristics using various techniques to capture expressions and likeness. Something to practice, art is definitely a skill you can develop and the more you practice the better you get. We then moved on to begin painting, where to start, how to mix colour and importantly how to build up the painting as you go along and bring it to life. David also shared with me a few cheats like using Q tips and kitchen rolls.

David’s teaching technique has you painting your picture whilst he does another identical one alongside you. Thus showing you how he goes about each step with you then following with yours, the challenge being that when finished, you try and ensure yours is better than his. I told David a quote of Leonardo Da Vinci “wretched is the pupil who does not go on to surpass his master”

The lessons passed very quickly, helped I must say by a glass or two of wine and with some great music playing in the background. David is a master story teller and it was most enjoyable listening to him whilst trying to concentrate on the details of my pictures.

To me David is the true Deia artist, a very talented fellow and great fun to be with. If you are looking to unwind, and relax over a few days in this beautiful village and to forget and take time out from your day to day, or perhaps find a new hobby or talent you did not know you have, give David a try. I would recommend him.

Finally have a look at Laurel and Hardy and see if you can decide which one is David’s and which is mine. Great fun

Andrew Horncastle

I'm teaching more these days. Andrew was great fun to be with , as well as well as being receptive and enthusiastic....the prerequisite of learning ! I prefer one to one, but small groups are welcome. I also teach life drawing classes from the model , still life + landscape drawing .

More Rock'nRoll : MEGA

One of the best gigs i ever had, was to make paintings for 'Mega' store in Sweden. In the 90s , i think it was the biggest music store in Europe, with many thousands passing through each week. Each month i would make a large oil painting , with a musical theme. I was free to choose whoever and whatever i wished. So i made ....' In Bed....with Marilyn and Madonna '
Michael Jackson releasing hundreds of coloured balloons into the sky......Pavarotti releasing doves into the night sky. Jimmy dean holding hands with Natalie Wood ( seconds before the 'chicken run' in 'Rebel' ) with Dylan standing close by. Roxette gave me a bunch of photos to work from , which i incorporated into a huge collage of them, and so it went on for a year or more. Law of averages says that with so many music fans viewing the paintings each month, there were going to be some sales , and so there were. I wish Palma had some place similar.
Painting that kind of stuff is such fun. As Oscar said, " Life is far too important to be taken seriously ."

Painting Elvis

All are oil paintings, based on a series of photos taken in 1956 . They each measure 114x146 cmsOn night in June 1977, i had a vivid dream of singing a duet with Elvis on stage. It was maybe triggered by seeing Elvis sing 'Witchcraft' with Frank Sinatra for one of Sinatra's T.V. specials . They were both dressed in tuxedo's and exemplified the epitome of 'cool'. As i lay there thinking about the dream , i suddenly realised that the 20th anniversay of Elvis' death , was only a 2 months away. How great it would be to make an exhibition of 20 images of early Elvis in a place where i could sing my favourite 20 Elvis songs with Pa amb Oli Band. The next morning i rang a friend Axel Schwarzberg, an influential lawyer/client/Elvis fan in Berlin. I asked him if he knew anyone connected with the Hard Rock Cafe , who might be interested in my idea. He said, " Forget it. It's too small, but you could show the paintings in The Chameleon Theatre, which i own, and sing there on the opening night for the Elvis Presley Fan Club ." So for the next 6 weeks i worked fast and furious , while simultaneously listening to and singing along with, Elvis' complete Sun recordings. The rest of Pa amb Oli didn't care for the idea, so the owner of the Chameleon, found a rockabilly band to back me. " They know every Elvis song. Don't worry , i'll fix everything. Just sing anything you want to do. " I arrived in Berlin the day before the show, with 20 large paintings crated up, and headed for the theatre. I started to hang the show, expecting my 'backing group' to appear . After an hour or more i saw a group of kids playing pinball. I explained why i was there, and if they'd seen or knew of the rockabilly band in question. " We are the band ," said a little girl who looked about 14 years old. I must have looked shocked and concerned , because they assured me they could play ANYTHING and we didn't even need to rehearse. I seem to recall we went through two numbers, and to me they sounded just as good as Scottie Moore and the boys !
Well, the rest of the story is predictable, but at the time , the whole experience blew my mind.
At the opening, all 400 members of the fan club turned up, and all 20 paintings sold within 2 hours. I sang 20 'Sun' numbers, 'That's Alright Mama', ' Trying To Get To You, 'One Night' 'Good Rockin' Tonight' , 'Blue Moon Of Kentucky', 'Tomorrow Night', 'Heartbreak Hotel', 'Milkcow Blues Boogie', 'Money Honey', 'Blue Moon', 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy', 'Hound Dog' ,
'Love Me Tender', 'Don't Be Cruel', 'Any Way That You Want Me', 'Long Tall Sally, 'Ready Teddy', ' Baby I Don't Care', 'Blue Suede Shoes', 'Shake Rattle and Roll'. Everyone danced wildly. They were into it as much as i was....real gone !
Bob Dylan will celebrate his 70th birthday on May 24th 2011. I wanna do the same kind of thing, in a really groovy venue - but where ??
